Civil War

San Antonio’s Harmonia Lodge, the oldest lodge in Texas, was founded July 6, 1861, three months into the Civil War. From the beginning the lodge enforced strict attendance requirements and demands for performance of officer duties, which was a challenge during a time when men were being called to military service. Attendance records from this era included one excused absence by a member who was afraid to leave his family alone during such “disquieting times.” From 1862-1865, any Hermann Sons members called to service were issued “traveling cards.” On August 30, 1862 it was recorded that only 5 members were present at the meeting, about ⅕ of the total membership.

Also during that time, Hermann Sons accepted payment of lodge dues in numerous monies in circulation, including Confederate and Mexican money and silver.
